- PreflopBlinds 10/20
I have AQs in early position, which is a strong starting hand. Raising to about 3x the big blind is a standard opening size.
“Let's see if this hand brings some action.”
Th 6h, same suit. T6s is not a call of an early 3x raise with four players still behind.
4-3 offsuit is junk that folds to any raise, especially from a tight early-position raiser like Gemini. No reason to put chips in with this hand.
I hold 5c5d, a pocket pair of fives, on the button facing a 3x raise from early position. Stacks are about 70bb deep, so calling in position to set-mine is profitable.
K9 offsuit is a weak defend out of position against Gemini’s early-position raise and Opus’s call, with Sonnet still able to raise behind me. The 25% call price does not compensate for domination risk and poor equity realization.
J8 suited in the big blind getting 150 into 40 is about 3.75 to 1 pot odds, so calling is clearly profitable. With two players already in and me out of position, I'd rather see a flop cheaply than build a bigger pot with a marginal hand.
- Flop 384Pot 190
I have top pair (eights) with a good kicker on a two-spade board, and I'm up against two opponents who each called a raise. I'll bet about half the pot for value and to charge draws.
I have the nut flush draw with two overcards on this board. A raise could win the pot outright or build it nicely for my strong draw.
“You really want to play for it all right now?”
I hold 5c5d on 8-4-3 with two spades: one pair of fives (second pair under the 8) plus an open-ended straight draw (3,4,5 with 8; a 6 makes 4-5-6-7-8? no — distinct ranks 3,4,5,8: a 2 needs A too; 6 and 7 both needed, so no straight draw beyond a gutshot-free hand), so really just a weak pair facing a big raise and a bettor behind. Fold.
Claude Sonnet 5.5Call 380 I have top pair with a decent kicker (8 with a J) on a dry-ish board, and Gemini's raise is big but could be a bluff or a flush draw. Pot odds are about 3:1, so calling 380 to win 760 needs roughly 25% equity, and top pair has that against a raising range.
- Turn 384KPot 1,140
I have middle pair, 8s, with a jack kicker on a K-high board. Gemini raised the flop big, which suggests a king or a set, so I'm probably behind. Checking controls the pot size and lets me see the river cheaply.
Geminitable talk “Let's see what the turn brings.”
Thought: I missed the turn, but I still have my flush draw and an ace-high draw. Sonnet is going to act first.
I have the nut flush draw but only Ace-high right now. Taking a free card is the safest play to realize my equity without risking the rest of my stack on a bluff.
“Taking a breather on the turn.”
- River 384K4Pot 1,140
I only have a pair of eights with a jack kicker on a paired board, and Gemini's flop raise and turn check suggest a stronger hand like a king or a better pair. Betting would mostly get called by better hands and fold out worse ones, so I check and take the free showdown.
“Well, that river didn't change much.”
Thought: I missed my flush draw and only have Ace high; I'll wait to see what Sonnet does.
My flush draw missed completely, leaving me with only Ace-high on a paired board. Sonnet called a massive flop raise, so they likely have a made hand; checking is the safest option here rather than risking my tournament life on a bluff.
“Guess we're just checking it down then.”
- ShowdownPot 1,140
Claude Sonnet 5.5 wins 1,140Two pair, eights and fours
Sonnet shows 8♣ J♣ (Two pair, eights and fours)
Gemini shows Q♠ A♠ (Pair of fours)
Opus misread its hand: "the only real draw is a 2 or 6 for an open-ended look at 3-4-5 plus one". Sonnet wins 1140 with two pair, eights and fours.
Sonnettable talk “Nice try with the spade draw, Gemini. The eight on the flop helped me out.”
Thought: Won a big pot with a pair of eights playing two pair; Gemini's raise was a semi-bluff with ace-high flush draw, so a brief friendly remark is fine.
“Nice call on the flop with the eights, Sonnet. Good hand.”
Thought: I totally whiffed my flush draw and overcards, but Sonnet called down with eights. Time to regroup.
“Good read, Sonnet. You caught me missing my draw.”
Thought: Sonnet read me perfectly and made a pair on the flop. A nice hand for him, time to regroup.
