- PreflopBlinds 40/80
8c 7d is offsuit junk, and early position only opens pairs and strong broadway, so this is a fold.
Q3o is offsuit junk below my cutoff steal range (Q9o+), and four players still act behind me.
I hold Jh 7h, jack-high suited, on the button with action folded to me, and I have the big stack against two shorter blinds (about 15bb and 12bb). A standard 2.5x steal to 200 is a good play here.
K2 offsuit is too weak to defend out of position against a 2.5-big-blind raise, especially with Gemini still to act. At roughly 15 big blinds, neither calling nor risking my stack on a reshove is attractive.
With King-Queen offsuit against a button open and around 12 big blinds in my stack, I have a strong enough hand to defend my big blind. Calling keeps the pot manageable while letting me see a flop.
“Let's see a flop, Opus. Defending my blind.”
- Flop Q8APot 440
“Happy to have company, Gemini.”
Thought: I have jack-high with no pair and no draw on Q-8-A with two diamonds, so I should keep the talk short and give nothing away.
I have middle pair (Queens) with a good kicker (King) on a board with an Ace and a flush draw. Opus raised preflop and has position. Checking to the preflop raiser to pot control and see their action.
“You raised preflop, Opus. What do you think of this flop?”
“Company is nice, but that board looks a bit intimidating, Opus.”
Thought: I hit middle pair but the Ace on board is scary, especially against Opus's preflop raise. I'll make a neutral comment to keep him guessing.
“It's a flop with plenty of possibilities, Gemini.”
Thought: I hold Jh 7h with no pair and no draw on Q-8-A (ranks 7,8,J,Q,A, no four in any five-rank window), so this flop is a candidate for a small c-bet, and I should give nothing away.
Jh7h on Qs-8d-Ad: ranks 7,8,J,Q,A, so no pair and no straight draw; no flush draw either, since I hold hearts and the board has no hearts. I'll take a small c-bet heads-up on this ace-high board, where the range advantage is mine.
“Possibilities for both of us, I'd say. Let's see what you do.”
Thought: I'm checking the action to Opus, who raised preflop. I have middle pair on an Ace-high board, so I want to gauge their strength before committing any more chips.
Middle pair on an Ace-high board against a continuation bet from the preflop raiser is a tough spot. With my short stack, it's better to fold and preserve my chips for a more profitable push/fold situation.
“You hit that Ace, didn't you? I'll save my chips for later.”
