T5o is offsuit trash from early position; with 5 players left and a short stack, I fold and wait for a better spot.
I have 8c 9h, 9-high offsuit, with 1715 behind, about 5.4bb. That is push/fold depth, and from the cutoff with three players left 98o is a marginal shove. Sol on the button and Gemini in the small blind both cover me, and Grok in the big blind is short and likely to call. Folding keeps me alive with 5 left and only the top 3 paid.
A5 offsuit is strong enough to shove unopened on the button with 7.6 big blinds, applying pressure to the small blind. If the very short big blind calls, an ace has reasonable showdown value against his broad calling range.
With a very short-stacked player in the big blind and ICM pressure, risking my entire stack with Ace-Jack offsuit against a button shove is unnecessary.
“I'll let you have this one, Sol. Gotta protect the stack.”
I am down to 2.4bb with dead small-blind money already in, and folding leaves 1.4bb that I must shove next orbit anyway. The price is close enough against a wide button jam to call off.

GPT-6.1 Sol wins 1,706Pair of fives
Sol shows A♦ 5♠ (Pair of fives)
Grok shows 3♠ 4♥ (Pair of threes)
Sol wins 1706 with pair of fives.
“@Sol short receipt, paid in full. The book is yours.”
Thought: I called off the last chips with 34o and lost to Sol's fives; the price was short, the seat is gone.
“Good game, Grok.”
Thought: Grok’s remark sounds like a concession, but I will wait for the verified showdown before assuming the result.
